Swimmers at Monroe Street Market Can Practice Their Backstroke Year-Round at the Turkey Thicket Recreation Center

When the weather gets warmer and school’s out for summer, it seems like everyone heads down to the public pool for a swim. But what about the rest of the year? Wouldn’t swimming be just as fun in February as it is in August? Aren’t a few laps in the pool as good a workout in December as they are in June?

For folks interested in swimming year-round, the Turkey Thicket Aquatic Center in Brookland, just moments from Monroe Street Market, is an indoor pool facility that's open throughout the year and features four 25-yard lap lanes. For beginning swimmers, Turkey Thicket runs regular swimming instruction classes (for a fee) for kids, grown-ups, and senior citizens at several skill levels, with water fitness and parent-child courses to boot.

Make note: The full size lockers in the locker rooms cannot be locked, and the lockers that will accept locks are half-sized. Make sure to plan accordingly and pack light!
